How to Prevent Common ATV Injuries This Summer

Summer is almost upon us, which for many people means it’s time to enjoy the great outdoors! When the days grow longer and the temperatures soar, it’s time to put away the boots, the mittens, and the heavy coats and change into cool and breezy outdoor wear.

Of course, summer is also the time to enjoy outdoor activities, including frolicking on the beach, barbecues with the family, hiking, and for the adventurous types, riding around in an ATV.

ATVs or all-terrain vehicles are motorized rides with low-pressure tires designed for off-road use. They have many uses, including racing, military applications, recreation, and more. ATVs have become hugely popular over the years, the downside of which is an increasing number of injuries and Santa Fe Toys Insurance claims.

The risks of using an ATV

Riding an ATV is undoubtedly an enjoyable activity. But it is also quite risky and could result in abrasions, bruises, fractures, and even death. According to MotoShark, ATV-related accidents have increased by as much as 50% in the years from 1982 to 2017.

The increase in accidents and injuries are attributable to many factors, including the following:

Children riding adult-sized ATVs

A study conducted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission revealed that many ATV-related deaths from 1985 to 2009 involved children using adult-sized ATVs. The research suggests that these bigger and faster vehicles carried an increased risk for younger users.

Keep in mind that ATVs are not a “one-size fits all vehicle.” Some are designed solely for adults, so they are riskier for children. Although there are ATVs intended for kids, many experts advise restricting their use to people aged 16 years and older.

Absence of additional seat belts

One of the most serious flaws of ATVs is the absence of additional seat belts. Most models only have a single strap to secure the driver. Passengers do not have any such protective devices, increasing their chances of injury if an accident occurs.

Driving on pavements

Accidents may also be caused by driving on pavements. Keep in mind that ATVs aren’t designed for smooth surfaces, whether on pavements, asphalt, or concrete. When operated on these surfaces, there is a high likelihood of skidding and losing control of the vehicle.

Tips for preventing injury while riding ATVs

All this shouldn’t dissuade you from getting on an ATV and having the time of your life. As we mentioned previously, they are undeniably fun to use. However, you do have to keep some safety precautions in mind to prevent injury. Here are some of the most important things to consider before getting on an ATV:

Attend an ATV safe driving course

Attending an ATV safe driving course could be one of the most helpful steps you could take to prevent injury on an ATV. These courses will teach safe driving practices that will increase your enjoyment of your vehicle while avoiding hurting yourself and others.

Wear the proper attire

Wearing a helmet and protective gear to ride an ATV might seem excessive, but it could help prevent severe injury and possibly even save your life. A full-face helmet is recommended, as are long-sleeve tops, long pants, gloves, and boots. These items of clothing could even help prevent minor injuries such as gashes and scrapes.

Ride alone

Avoid having passengers with you. ATVs are designed only for a single driver, and the chances of accidents increase exponentially the more people you have on board with you. Having other people will also make the vehicle more difficult to control, which puts everyone at risk.

Keep off paved roads

You should also avoid paved roads and smooth surfaces as much as possible. As we mentioned previously, ATVs are designed for off-roading. Use them for the purpose they were intended for and you will have a safer driving experience.

Stay away from steep hills

Unless you know what you are doing, it would probably be best to remain on level ground. While the idea of revving an ATV up a hill or sand dune may seem exciting, that’s when most accidents occur. Keep in mind that ATVs have short wheelbases and compact wheel spacing. This makes them ill-suited for climbing steep angles and increases the chances of them flipping over and pinning you underneath.

An ATV can be one of the most fun and enjoyable vehicles you could own. But there is a risk of serious injury if you aren’t careful and ignore basic safety practices. Keep these tips in mind, and you should be able to enjoy your ATV safely.
